Tom Cavendish
Celebrating his 27th Season as the General/Artistic
Director of the Gold Coast Opera, Tom Cavendish has amassed a repertoire of over
40 works for the lyric stage. Mr. Cavendish conducted a light classical
orchestra series with the Gold Coast Symphony from 1990 to 1993 at the OMNI
Auditorium in Pompano Beach. Other orchestral credits include BRAVO BROADWAY
concerts with the Florida Symphonic Pops of Boca Raton, six Operatic Highlights
programs on the Wynmoor Concert Series, 1993 to 2003 with the Gold Coast Opera
Orchestra, and guest appearances with the Florida Classical Orchestra, the
Charleston South Carolina Symphony, plus a Viennese night in the South Florida
Symphony Summer Festival. After studying in Vienna, Mr. Cavendish has enjoyed
great success with the Viennese operetta and its successor, the American
operetta. Operettas have
been featured in several Gold Coast Opera productions, and the maestro has
conducted The Beggar Student (Bettelstudent) and The Count of
Luxembourg
for the Chicago Light Opera Company.
During his tenure with the company, he has brought many artists of international
stature to star in GCO productions including Roberta Peters, Jerome Hines, Spiro
Malas, Dominic Cossa, and Pauletta de Vaughn, as well as television stars Don
Stewart, Anson Williams and Ron Raines. Many young artists who were featured by
the company have gone on to national and international careers, most notably
Adria Firestone and Metropolitan Opera artists Dean Peterson and Gregory
Kunde. In recent years, Maestro Cavendish has conducted at several European
festivals including Aida at the International Verdi Festival in Romania
and La Traviata at the Janacek Festival in the Czech Republic. During
GCO's 20th Anniversary Festival, he conducted Teatro Lirico d'Europa's
Turandot at Bailey Hall. In February 2003, he conducted the company's
touring production of Aida at Florida Atlantic University Performing Arts
Auditorium.
In the summer of 2005, Maestro Cavendish made his Italian debut conducting
the Sinfonia of the Tito Schipa Foundation for their Annual Italian Summer
Festival. Two series of programs were performed in Gallipoli, Lecce and
San Pancranzo. Appearing with the maestro and the orchestra were pianists
Alessio Bax and Igor Kamens.
Maestro Cavendish was recently recognized by Opera America for twenty five
years of dynamic artistic leadership of Gold Coast Opera. He is also in demand
for master classes at music schools and universities throughout North America.
The maestro has also conducted many of the world’s great choral works. As
Director of the NORTH BROWARD ORATORIO CHORUS for ten years, he conducted
performances with full orchestra of the great repertoire: MESSIAH, ELIJAH, the
GERMAN REQUIEM of Brahms, CARMINA BURANA with ballet, Honegger,s KING DAVID with
special guest narrator Alexander Scourby, Borodin’s POLOVETSIAN DANCES,
Britten’s SERENADE TO MUSIC, the Rossini STABAT MATER, and liturgical works of
Schubert, Mozart, Donizetti, and Faure..
Thomas Cavendish is well known in South Florida as a singer. For several years
he performed baritone compramario operatic roles with the Greater Miami Opera,
leading roles with the Florida Family Opera, and solo appearances with the Ft.
Lauderdale, Miami Beach, and South Florida Symophony orchestras. Thomas and his
wife, Cheryl Cavendish, concertized for many years together, specializing in the
“Nelson Eddy and Jeanette McDonald” repertoire. He also received critical
acclaim from several journals in Vienna,Austria, for his portrrayal of the title
role in Carlisle Floyd’s opera, MARKHEIM, produced by the Amerika Haus and
performed at the American Consulate.
