Thomas Cavendish is a PhD graduate from the Florida State University School of Music and will celebrate his 30th season as Artistic Director/Conductor of South Florida's GOLD COAST OPERA in 2010. He has amassed a repertoire of over forty five works for the lyric stage, including twenty two standard repertory operas. The maestro has featured many international artists with GCO including Roberta Peters, Jerome Hines, Spiro Malas, Dominic Cossa, Pauletta deVaughn, and television stars Don Stewart and Ron Raines of Guiding Light fame. The opera company has also nurtured many young artists who have gone on to major careers, most notably Adria Firestone and Metropolitan Opera artists Gregory Kunde and Dean Peterson.
In recent years the maestro has conducted operas at several European festivals including the Janacek Festival in the Czech Republic, the Verdi Centennial Festival in Romania, and the Silesian Opera Festival in Katowice Poland.
After post doctoral study in Vienna, Dr. Cavendish has enjoyed great success with the Viennese operetta and its successor the American operetta in GCO productions. He has also conducted the Viennese operettas BETTELSTUDENT(the beggar student) and THE COUNT OF LUXEMBOURG for the Chicago Light Opera company.
Although specializing primarily in opera conducting, Maestro Cavendish has many orchestral appearances to his credit. From 1990 to 1993, he conducted the Gold Coast Symphony in a series of light classical concerts at the OMNI Auditorium in Pompano Beach, Fla., which featured many outstanding artists incuding pianists Paul Posnak and Colin Welford as well as narrator John Hambrick, soprano Jane Thorngren and ballerina Natasia Adderton. In 2005, he was a featured guest conductor for the Orchestra dalla Fondazione Tito Schipa Summer Festival in Italy, conducting concerts with featured pianists Alessio Bax and Igor Kamens in Lecce, Gallipoli, and San Pancranzo Italy. Other credits include eight Operatic highlights concerts for the Wynmoor(Fla) concert series from 1993 to 2010 with the Gold Coast Opera Orchestra; the BRAVO BROADWAY series with the Florida Symphonic Pops of Boca Raton; a Baroque Chamber Music concert for the First Presbyterian Church, Ft. Lauderdale with the Strings of the Gold Coast Festival Orchestra and the Arcangelo Quartet; and guest engagements with the Charleston South Carolina Symphony Orchestra, the Florida Classical Orchestra, and a Viennese Evening with the South Florida Symphony in their Summer Festival.
In February 2009, Dr. Cavendsh conducted singers Olivia Gorra, Kip Wilborn, and Victor Ryan Robertson in the "Tribute to Pavarotti" concert with the Florida Sunshine Pops Orchestra.
Maestro Cavendish was recently recognized by Opera America for twenty five years of distinguished artistic leadership. He has also acheived success as a teacher and coach for young singers as well as an operatic and cultural travel guide.
